Tonight…Thursday October 5, 2017 we will see the first Harvest Moon in October in almost 10 years.
Normally, the Harvest Moon happens in September.
The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox.
What this means is we get more than normal bright moonlight early in the evening.
It got its’ name since this extra light was helpful to farm workers harvesting late summer crops.
Thus, the ‘Harvest Moon’…
It’s good day for a little extra brightness after this past dark week….
Under the Harvest Moon
Carl Sandburg, 1878 – 1967
Under the harvest moon,
When the soft silver
Drips shimmering
Over the garden nights,
Death, the gray mocker,
Comes and whispers to you
As a beautiful friend
Who remembers.
Under the summer roses
When the flagrant crimson
Lurks in the dusk
Of the wild red leaves,
Love, with little hands,
Comes and touches you
With a thousand memories,
And asks you
Beautiful, unanswerable questions.
